Measure the Treasure

I was recently standing in a queue at the local cinema waiting to purchase my traditional helping of large nacho's (with 2 cheese dips) when the woman in front of me decided to take an age to decide on her order.  She had inadvertently placed herself in the hilarious situation of calling her husband who was at the checkout on the floor below us (for reasons unknown) and creating the misunderstanding of convincing him she was asking him to place the order for her whereas in fact she was telling him what she was going to buy.  Here comes the funny bit - amid the confusion they both ended up buying the same snacks for each other, spending double the money.

Meanwhile, I'm left lingering behind her, in the slightly uncomfortable position of being at the cinema alone and therefore having nobody to talk to.  So to occupy my time I allow my eyes to start browsing the wall behind the counter and it is there that I spot the tantalising offer of the chance to win a free diet coke by asking for a scratch card when placing your order.  What a waste of time I thought, I bet nobody ever asks for their chance to win.

But as I left the cinema that evening I was unable to shake the free offer from my mind.  What if, I thought, I were to enter every competition I see, would I be able to turn a profit?  And would it make life easier, happier?  My track record is pretty good.  I am currently the proud winner of three consecutive 'Name the Bear' competitions, making me the not so proud owner of three teddy bears.  But what if I could transfer this talent onto items and rewards that I actually want?  As the saying goes, you've got to be in it to win it.

With that in mind I have decided to make a record of every single competition or prize that I sign up to win for the next 3 months.  I will look to see whether I am making a profit or a loss.  It's not my job to seek out these offers, but more not reject them if and when they cross my path.  I'm going to measure the treasure.
